A power bank is one of those things you don’t think about until your phone dies on a train journey or during a long day outside. In India, with long commutes, travel and the occasional power cut, a good power bank is almost essential. But there are many cheap, unsafe ones in the market, and the “20000mAh” written on the box doesn’t always mean what you think.
This guide covers the power banks we think are worth buying in October 2026, and explains capacity, charging speed and safety in simple terms. We have not mentioned prices because they change often. Please check the latest price on Amazon.
First, understand the numbers
- mAh (capacity): a 10,000mAh power bank does not give your phone 10,000mAh. Due to voltage conversion and heat, you typically get around 6,200–7,000mAh of usable charge. That is about 1.5 full charges for a phone with a 5,000mAh battery. A 20,000mAh pack gives roughly double.
- Watts (speed): 10–12W is slow, 18–22.5W is fast for most phones, and 45W–100W is for laptops and fast-charging phones. Your phone and cable must support the same standard (USB PD or PPS) to get full speed.
- Wh (watt-hours): airlines use this. Wh = mAh × 3.7 ÷ 1000. A 20,000mAh power bank is about 74Wh.
Flying? Read this first
Power banks must go in your cabin bag, never in checked-in luggage. Power banks under 100Wh (about 27,000mAh) are generally allowed. Between 100Wh and 160Wh usually needs airline approval, and above 160Wh is not allowed. Some airlines also restrict using power banks during the flight. Always check your airline’s latest rules.

Safety tips: please don’t skip
- Buy BIS-certified power banks. BIS registration is compulsory in India. Look for the BIS mark and registration number on the product.
- Avoid unbranded, very cheap packs. They often use low-quality cells and can overheat.
- Stop using a swollen power bank immediately. If it bulges, gets very hot or smells odd, dispose of it safely at an e-waste collection point.
- Don’t charge it under a pillow or in direct sunlight, like on a car dashboard.
- Use a good cable. Cheap cables limit speed and can be unsafe.

How long does a power bank last?
Typically 2–3 years or a few hundred charge cycles. Capacity reduces slowly over time.
