5G is now available in most Indian cities and many towns, and almost every new phone above the entry-level says “5G” on the box. But not all 5G phones are equal. Some support only a few 5G bands, some imported phones don’t work properly on Indian networks, and the chip, software and battery matter just as much. Is guide mein hum simple language mein samjhayenge what to check before buying a 5G phone in India.
Do you even need 5G right now?
If you live in a city or town with good 5G coverage from Jio or Airtel, 5G can give you much faster downloads and smoother video calls. Even if 5G is weak in your area today, coverage keeps expanding, and most people keep a phone for 2–4 years. So if your budget allows, buying a 5G phone is a sensible, future-proof choice. If you are on a very tight budget and mainly use WhatsApp and UPI, a good 4G phone is still fine.
Understanding 5G bands in India (simple version)
A “band” is a range of radio frequencies. Your phone must support the bands your operator uses.
- n78 (3.5GHz): the main 5G band in India, used by both Jio and Airtel. Every 5G phone you buy in India must support it.
- n28 (700MHz): used by Jio. Low-frequency signals travel further and go through walls better, so n28 helps indoors and in smaller towns and rural areas.
- Other bands (n1, n3, n5, n8, n40, n41): operators may use these for wider coverage. More bands generally means better compatibility in the future.
Tip: check the phone’s specification page for “5G bands”. If it lists both n78 and n28, it is a safe choice for both Jio and Airtel.
SA vs NSA: what is it?
There are two ways operators run 5G:
- NSA (Non-Standalone): 5G that relies on the 4G network in the background.
- SA (Standalone): pure 5G, end to end. Jio’s “True 5G” uses SA.
Phones sold officially in India generally support both, but make sure your phone’s software is up to date and set “5G” as the preferred network type in settings. If 5G doesn’t show up, a software update often fixes it.
Be careful with imported phones
A phone bought abroad, or a grey-market import, may use different firmware that disables Indian bands like n28, or may not support SA properly. Always prefer the official Indian variant, which also gives you brand warranty in India.
Beyond 5G: what else to check
- Processor: the chip decides speed and battery efficiency. Entry-level 5G chips (like the Dimensity 6300 or Snapdragon 4-series) are fine for daily use. Mid-range chips (Dimensity 7000-series, Snapdragon 6/7-series) are better for gaming and multitasking.
- Battery: 5G uses a little more power. Aim for 5,000mAh or more.
- Software updates: a phone with longer update support stays secure for banking and UPI apps for longer. Samsung currently leads at budget prices.
- RAM and storage: 6GB/128GB is the practical minimum in 2026.
- Display: a 120Hz screen makes everyday use smoother.
- Durability: IP64 or better helps in the monsoon.
Myths about 5G phones
- “More bands = always faster.” Not exactly. Bands affect where your phone gets 5G, not peak speed. Speed depends more on network conditions.
- “5G drains the battery very fast.” Modern 5G chips are efficient. You may see a small difference, not a huge one.
- “I need a new SIM for 5G.” No. Your existing Jio or Airtel 4G SIM works on 5G if your plan and area support it.

- Run a speed test to compare 4G and 5G speeds.
- If 5G doesn’t show, update the phone’s software and restart.
Quick 5G buying checklist
| Check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| 5G bands | At least n78 and n28 |
| Network mode | SA and NSA support |
| Variant | Official Indian model with brand warranty |
| Chip | Dimensity 6300 / Snapdragon 4-series or better |
| Battery | 5,000mAh or more |
| Updates | At least 2 Android updates; more is better |
Our verdict
A good 5G phone for India supports the key n78 and n28 bands, works on both SA and NSA networks, and is the official Indian variant. After that, choose based on chip, battery and software support, just like any other phone. 5G is a bonus. A phone that is fast, lasts all day and gets updates is what really matters.
